Toybox and shelf/desk for kids

After not finding any kid furniture that we were completely happy with, I decided to design and create my own large rolling toybox and plastic-bin holding shelf that can turn into a desk as the kids grow up. If I can find some time, I might add some detailed plans for this project. But for now I’ll just post a couple of photos of the finished products.

  1. Kurt,

I was browsing through the internet and saw your toy box, my wife and i really liked it. Is there a set of plans for the toy box and shelves? I want to make one for my kids. Please let me know.

    Thank you,

    Thom M

  2. Hello Thom! Glad you like the toy box. I wish I had plans for it, but I just basically made it up as I went. It’s just plywood joined with biscuit joints.

  3. This is really neat. If you don’t mind me asking, what are the dimensions? I had sketched something similar to build for my grandson but couldn’t get the sizing right.

  4. Here are some rough measurements. The toybox is 34 inches wide, 20 inches high and 20 inches deep. The desk is 37 inches wide, 48 inches high and 24 inches deep at the bottom where the toybox slips inside it.

I really should draw up some plans and put those up on the website. It’s on my list, but it’s just not very high priority on my list.

  5. Nice toy box/shelf combination. I was imaging something like this. I’m glad to see someone else had the same idea and posted it online. Having the magnetic boards on the sides was a nice addition. What did you use or where could I find the magnetic boards?

  6. My magnetic boards were custom made but many store bought white boards are also magnetic these days. Office supply stores or school supplies.

  7. Nice toy box. Wife and I think it will be perfect for us. Just ordered 4 pcs. 8″ wide totes and going to start building. Did you ever get around to making plans? What did you use for crossbar holding totes back? What did you use for wheels?

  8. Hey, I asked my husband if he can recreate this and he wondered if there were plans. I tried to email you using the link below but it wouldn’t work.
    Please email me,
    Thank you!

  9. Kurt do you build them and sell them? I would be willing to buy one from you. Please email me back and let me know.
